Frequently asked questions

What kinds of stories can I share?

We welcome stories about queer life in the South—identity, friendship, family, disability, creativity, love, belonging, and everyday joy. Your story doesn’t need to be dramatic to matter.

Do I need to be a writer or have a finished story?

No. You can submit a finished piece, a personal memory, or an idea you’d like to explore. Write in your own voice and start wherever you feel comfortable.

Can I use a pen name or keep my identity private?

You’re welcome to submit using a chosen name or pen name. Let us know your privacy preferences in the form so we can discuss how you’d like to be credited before anything is published.

Will my story automatically be published?

No. Every submission is reviewed. If we’d like to feature your story, we’ll contact you about next steps and ask for your approval before publishing.

What happens after I submit?

We’ll receive your submission and review it for Oi Am Queer. If it seems like a fit, we’ll reach out using the email address you provided. Submitting doesn’t guarantee publication, but we appreciate the trust it takes to share.

Will my story be edited, and will I approve the final version?

Never without your approval.

As our collection grows, we’ll organize stories into categories and explore different ways to share them. We may suggest edits for clarity, length, or format while preserving your voice and meaning. You’ll have the opportunity to review and approve the final version before it’s published.

If we’d like to feature a snippet, quote, or adapted version in our newsletter or on social media, we’ll ask for your approval of that content before sharing it, too.

Where could my story appear?

Your story could be featured on the Oi Am Queer website, in our newsletter, or on our social media channels. As our collection grows, we’ll develop categories and explore formats that help each story connect with readers.

We’ll discuss where and how we’d like to share your story and get your approval before publishing—including any snippets, quotes, or adapted content created for other channels.
